Since we live in a world where most foods are readily available, there is no surprise that there are many types of meat, a fact that both pleases and puzzles some people.
To distinguish the different types, such as dry aged meat and grass fed meats, there are a number of initiatives in place which promote the benefits of each. Recently, for example, the government in Canada approved a new food certification label that shows consumers which products have been made with 100% grass fed meat.
Animal Welfare Approved has introduced what is thought to be the first food certification label which gives consumers the peace of mind that the food they are buying has come from animals which have been fed solely on grass. This is becoming a big issue across the world since grass fed meats are said to be the healthiest as, for cows, grass is the most natural dietary option.
The label is a result of a collective demand from consumers and farmers to make the distinction clearer and set new Canadian standards. Since the term ‘grass fed’ is not regulated in Canada, many farmers were able to label their meat as grass fed without being completely truthful.
Animal Welfare Approved sensed the need for distinction, hence the introduction of the label. As well as the label, the group’s new Grassfed program makes sure farms are complying with the strict standards.
The label and the standards have since been approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which is responsible for the policies involving labelling and making sure farmers can label their products confidently.
