The players of two of Hull’s biggest sports clubs took part in a charity eating challenge recently, taking inspiration from the hit U.S. TV show Man vs. Food.
Jason Rowe and Sally McIntosh organised the event to raise funds for the Steve Prescott Foundation and hosted it at their recently-opened restaurant, Rebels’ Smokehouse, which is aptly located on Butcher Row.
As part of the event, Hull KR’s Jason Netherton went head-to-head with Aaron Heremaia, who plays for Hull FC, to tackle the gigantic MeetMeatEat platter, which comprises ribs, four corndogs, four burgers, pulled pork, buffalo wings and a range of other BBQ meats. This is all accompanied by a collection of eight side orders, including mash potato, macaroni cheese and fries.
Despite being only a few days before the two rugby league clubs were due to face each other in a big derby, the two athletes immersed themselves in the contest. Heremaia, however, went on to take the victory, completing the meal which is usually put together for four diners. Speaking about the event, he said:
“I’m really happy I won, but it’s all a bit of fun at the end of the day and, of course, we need to remember why we are all here, to raise money for such a good charity.”
There’s been a significant increase in the number of charity BBQ challenges taking place across the UK recently, something which many have put down to the rise in popularity of shows like Man vs. Food and the availability of, and convenience provided by, online butchers.
