According to TV chef Jamie Oliver, many families who are on a tight budget are buying food that is more expensive than it is nutritious.
In today’s economy, people should be spending more wisely when it comes to buying food, but most consumers find it difficult to source cheap products which offer the right health benefits. Jamie Oliver says, however, that this shouldn’t be the case.
Oliver has a new Channel 4 TV series called ‘Jamie’s Money Saving Meals’, which is dedicated to helping people save money on their food bills while stocking up on nutritious, healthy food. He said recently in a Radio Times interview that the poorer countries tend to have a good understanding of food – something which the UK lacks.
Oliver believes that families living in poorer households in the UK can learn a lot from those in many struggling countries. He said:
“Some of the most inspirational food in the world comes from areas here people are financially challenged.”
One of the things that Oliver’s TV show teaches viewers is that going to the market is cheaper than the supermarket, as nothing is wasted. Supermarkets sell in large quantities, whereas markets allow you to buy specific items.
One way many consumers are staying on top of nutrition without breaking the bank is by turning to online butchers. With a wider selection of products – including BBQ meats and award winning sausages – and more information about where they have come from, these vendors are increasing in popularity.
