There has been a lot of debate over the best way to farm animals, and people have long been having problems with factory farms in particular. With various viewpoints considered, people may be right to have issues with the way animals are reared in these farms. Not only do they live in a very small space, they are fed quickly and pumped with medicines, making the end meat product considerably less than satisfying and relatively unhealthy.
The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ rings true with many foods, especially beef. This means that if the source is natural and healthy, the end product will be too, which is why grass fed beef is fast becoming a popular type of meat. Rearing cattle on grass rather than corn is healthier because the cow’s stomach has evolved to break grass down efficiently and healthily. Cattle are often reared on corn because it fattens them up quicker, allowing farmers to produce more meat in a shorter period of time, but this process is less healthy for both the animal and human.
Although it takes longer to rear cattle on grass, the overall outcome is much more beneficial and experts have been recognising the positives for years. Not only is grass fed beef lower in saturated fat, it is also higher in omega 3 acids. These factors make grass fed beef a little more expensive but going by its recent popularity, the health benefits are more than justified.
