A recent European Commission study measuring the quality of meat services and goods in the EU has seen the UK score a position the top five countries.
The survey involved questioning more than 13,000 consumers in 27 countries within the EU, and the results were used to rank the different markets in order of performance. These findings were then used to see which meat markets are the best functioning markets for consumers. The UK scored an impressive 17 out of 19.
The areas looked at include the quality of meat, the sustainability, health, and other important areas. These findings are meant to give consumers information and guidance on buying meat, as well as waste issues and labelling.
The study also found that consumers prefer to buy more of organic meat, but often find it too expensive to do so. Some people find online butchers are a solution to this as they are generally cheaper than supermarkets and allow items to be bought in bulk. It was also found that a proportion of meat was wasted for various reasons. One way to make the most of waste is by making black pudding, which is popular within the UK.
Despite all the findings, meat is still in high demand, and the fact that the UK was in the top five is encouraging to consumers, especially since higher rates of production on types like dry aged beef and corn fed chicken has meant that quality has come under closer scrutiny.
